Snatch

Brad Pitt as a one-punch gypsy, Jason Statham being his casual self, Vinnie Jones as your typical bad guy. All under the lead of one director, Guy Ritchie. The movie's an all rounder British comedy beautifully executed. I must say that Brad Pitt takes his role in this movie to a whole other level being a gypsy. He's just painfully funny especially with that accent of his. He absolutely has it on point! Snatch is the perfect choice if you wanna sit back and enjoy a good laugh after a long day at work/uni and take it all the way back to the end of the 20th century. Although I must give you a fair warning to turn on the subtitles once Brad starts talking. You won't be able to follow if you just use your ears for this. If you're up for a challenge, trying making a game out of it by jotting down what you think he said, compare answers with whoever you're watching it with, then see who's right! I betcha you'll find many cases when none...

SPLIT

SPLIT Probably the most entertaining movie I've watched in a while. "SPLIT" a thriller, starring James McAvoy, directed M. Night Shyamalan. McAvoy plays Kevin Wendle Crum, a man with 24 different personalities,  how ever, they aren't just personalities. Each character is basically another person with their own interests, own problems, physically and mentally. The only thing is, they all co exist in Kevins' body. To give you some insight, one of the identities, "Jade" has diabetes and requires insulin shots whilst none of the others do.  So its about A few of Kevins identities abducting three teenage girls for a "ritual" for the 24th identity, i can't say any more than that otherwise ill spoil it. Whilst watching the movie you'll feel really immersed. McAvoys unreal acting brings you in and as every knew identity emerges its like theres a new layer to the movie. Watching Mcavoys portray portrayal of Kevin Wendle Crum and ...

Thoughts on... In Bruges

"It's in Belgium."           By Desmond Now this is one of my favourites - a blend of dark-comedy and melancholy, with surprising depth.  Back when I first saw it, during the opening scene I could tell I was in for something special. A haunting piano theme plays over many shots of well-preserved medieval architecture, while hired hitman, Ray (Colin Farrell), provides the excellent tone-setting voiceover: “After I killed him, I dropped the gun in the Thames, washed the residue off my hands in the bathroom of a Burger King, and walked home to await instructions”. The instructions would come; leading to a town called Bruges, a little fishing village somewhere in Belgium. From here, the film opens up on the premise. Ray and Ken, two hitmen who were working an assignment in London for an employer simply named Harry, flee the city after their recent job takes an innocent casualty. It is here that we are introduced to the titular Bruges, a town who...

Indiana Jones - Raiders of the Lost Ark

Taking it back to another old school movie this week; Indiana Jones Raiders of the Lost Ark. I first watched this movie when I was about 12 and have watched it countless times since and could watch it a million times more. This movie keeps you hooked from beginning to end with an incredible and upbeat soundtrack, fast paced adventure, incredible fight scenes and successive suspenseful, death-defying cliff-hangers. The special effects are amazing for the time period the movie was made, and the fact that old school methods (no CGI) were used to create the special effects makes this movie that much more remarkable. Like many other action movies, Raiders also has a bit of romance thrown in there. However, unlike other movies where the female lead is often a damsel in distress who constantly needs rescuing, in Raiders the female lead, Marion, is a hardcore and formidable woman who can definitely take care of herself. Now of course I can’t write about Raider without mentioning...

The Big Short

Not your average Hollywood movie however director Adam McKay does a brilliant job at encapsulating the lead up to how the GFC happened with jargon simplified by guest appearances such as Selina Gomez and Margo Robbie. With an already incredible cast such as Steve Carrel, Brad Pitt, Ryan Gosling, and Christian Bale it provides a solid 2 hours of entertainment about something so devastatingly boring such as the ins and outs of the financial sector. However, the way it’s directed, it’s dialogue and everything in between. Rated 7.8/10 on IMDb, it’s one of the most thought provoking movies where you’ll know more about something you probably never thought about to begin with. http://www.imdb.com/title/tt1596363/

Zodiac

The zodiac is a 2007 film directed by David Fincher, starring Jake Gyllenhaal, Robert Downey Jr and Mark Ruffalo. Based in the late 1960s to early 1970s Jake Gyllenhaal as a cartoonist who becomes an amateur detective through his obsession with tracking down a serial killer that goes by “the zodiac killer” who is an unidentified individual on a killing spree in northern California. The Zodiac is a serial killer thats committed murders and reported them himself, he leaves authorities creative and complex riddles as a clue for the next occurrence, how ever the only one thats cracking them is a cartoonist from San Fransisco. This is the kind of movie that just suck you in even if you just land on it half way through. Its not only the plot or the cast that does this but its the feel, eeriness and constantly building tension that’ll make you want to watch more. Whilst watching you not only taken on the journey of someone doing everything they possibly can to stop ...

Fate of the Furious

The wait has finally come to an end, the latest from the F&F series is finally here! This movie is an absolute blockbuster, passing a billion dollars at the global box office and shattering the previous record that The Force Awakens has set. The movie still keeps its style with car chases and cool explosions here and there, not to mention the anticipated fight scenes between the toughest characters. Going into the movie with the trailer in mind, the combination of the two really sinks in and blends beautifully. If you're an F&F die hard fan, then prepare yourself for your movie of the year. The Fate of The Furious had a perfect combination of drama, action, and comedy. The romantic drama with Dom &Letty, the energetic rivalry between Hobbs & Deckard, and of course the bursting comedy between Tej and Roman. All of these factors mash up to provide the viewers with a guaranteed brilliant cinematic experience. As a true fan myself, I had many...

Thoughts on... Green Room

"Fleischwolf"                 By Desmond Going into this film I had very little expectations. Which is an odd feeling, in an age where we are constantly barraged with overly descriptive trailers and promos. So much of cinema is devoted to presold blockbuster sequels and prequels, whose garish spectacle is only matched by the enormity of its marketing campaign. In many occasions, hype seems to be embedded in the act of movie-watching. Green Room is unique in that it revels in its relatively obscure status, crafting a tightly paced and unpredictable thrill ride; one I could never have foreseen. The basic premise of the film goes like this: punk band, “the Ain’t Rights”, travelling in a van across the pacific northwest, find themselves an opportunity to perform at a club on the outskirts of Portland, Oregon. The catch? The place is owned and run by neo-Nazis. After witnessing a murder, the band find themselves trapped and surrounde...

The School Of Rock

If you haven’t guessed by now, my favourite types of movies are those with amazing sound tracks. So sticking with that theme, let’s talk about The School of Rock. This musical comedy follows the story of a rock musician Dewey, played by Jack Black, who gets kicked out of his band and then impersonates his roommate, a substitute teacher at a prep school, to make some cash. Soon after, Dewey discovers the kids are amazing musicians and teaches them the ways of rock, in an attempt to win Battle of the Bands and the accompanying prize money.  The sound track to this movie is filled with some great classic rock songs including “Back in Black” by AC/DC, “Immigrant Song” by Led Zeppelin and “Edge of Seventeen” by Stevie Nicks. The other thing I love about the soundtrack in this movie is that it showcases the amazing talent of young musicians. And of course, they couldn’t have cast a better actor/musician main character; Jack Black’s energy, comedic facial expressions and musi...
