Thoughts on... Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 (Spoiler-free)

'Father And Son' By Desmond There’s really nothing quite like watching a new Marvel film at the cinema. It has this kind of raw, eclectic energy which flows through a careful balance of heart, humour, and self-awareness. And that energy is definitely contagious. Yet, within this shared aesthetic, I sometimes find them bound to a constant struggle between reconciling the zany comic book roots of the source material, and telling a more grounded tale for film.  The first Guardians of the Galaxy was the complete opposite of grounded; providing some vague links to the worlds we have previously bore witness to before leaving it all behind. This bold new direction, embracing the wonder and absurdity of the source material, channeled through likeable characters, showed the promise of the franchise. It was, in my mind, the most refreshing IP from Marvel Studios in a very long time. Guardians of the galaxy Vol. 2 continues in the path of the first, delivering laugh...

WHY HIM?

This week ill be taking about the recent comedy "Why him?". It's a comedy staring James Franco and Bryan Cranston. The film is about an uptight dad played by Bryan Cranston that loves his precious daughter who is a senior in college, the uptight dad, "Ned" and his wife and son go out to visit their daughter Stephanie played by Zoey Deutch and meet her new boyfriend Laird played by James Franco.  During the trip the parents are shocked to find out that Laird is a Silicon Valley Millionaire and that he's 10 years older than Stephanie.  I found the movie to be really funny at times and at other times pretty mediocre. both Franco and Cranston play their Characters really well, you'll find Franco’s character is obscene but hilarious   whilst Cranston’s Character is pretty cliche uptight dad. its one of those classic family comedies like “Meet the Fockers” in a way but its a lot more modern, and James Francos' character Laird takes it to a...

The Rocky Horror Picture Show

So this week instead of talking about a very recent movie, thought I’d go to the other end of the spectrum, all the way back to a very good movie from 1975 – The Rocky Horror Picture Show. This movie manages to combine three very different genres (musical, comedy and horror) with a unique and very strange storyline. Very briefly, this movie tells the story of a young engaged couple who enter a castle when their car breaks down. They discover the castle is inhabited by a variety of strange people in elaborate costumes, including the master of the house, Dr Frank N. Furter, a mad-scientist transvestite. Now I don’t want to spoil the movie for those that haven’t seen it, but the plot also includes a muscle man created by Dr Frank N Furter, a murder, implied sex scenes and aliens…it really doesn’t get much weirder than that. This weird storyline is perfectly complimented by amazing music that is well written, catchy and also a little wacky with songs titled “Sweet Transvestite”, “T...

The Incredibles

One of the most popular animated films in Hollywood with an IMDB rating of 8/10 and grossed $633 million at the box office, The Incredibles has been of of the most successful feature films. The movie explores complexities within super humans. The Incredibles highlights ideas about family, values and morals. Although some of the themes of the film might not be aged appropriate for children such as scenes of passenger planes exploding, destruction of public property and scenes manipulation of main characters perceived to be good, the reviews of the movie have been overall positive.  The Incredibles, directed by Brad Bird has done a terrific job in showcasing an idea of a simple superhero, fictitious movie into a morally significant piece of art where it shows the basics of a regular household of 4 members with regular problems in a regular world. However, when Mr. Incredible receives a call to go to a ‘conference’, his whole life is reversed where he is able ...
